About Cydney Shaw:
My name is Cydney Rose Shaw I am currently a junior at Chapin High School where I have been on varsity since freshman year. My role as setter for our varsity team and club teams have provided me with the opportunity and responsibility for improving my setting skills,
defensive skills, and developing a strong serve. I have been blessed
with the opportunity to participate in club volleyball since the age of
11 and I’ve played for a variety of coaches who have all taught me something a little more about volleyball to add to my skill, knowledge, and value set for playing the game. Volleyball has taught me lessons and skills that I transfer to my life, time management, leadership, passion, hard work, discipline, and meeting pressures and challenges that life has to offer. Perhaps the most enjoyable and challenging part of being a captain and member of my high school and club team is learning how to lead others, encourage others, and work together to reach a common goal. Volleyball provides me with an outlet and a joy where hard work and dedication to each point and each play pays off when everyone is committed to the same mission. I’ve attended the toughest setting academy in the United States sponsored by Sports Performance out of the Great Lakes Volleyball Center for three years in order to continue learning and improving my knowledge, skills, and attitude as a setter.
Besides volleyball I enjoy reading, being with my family and friends, and traveling. Academics is my ticket to my future, I understand this well and I push myself by taking Advanced Placement courses at Chapin High School and maintaining a 3.6 GPA while playing volleyball. I’m currently ranked 43 out of 428 students, just lying outside the top 10% in my class, I plan to work hard to get in the top 10%. I have a passion for writing and have been recognized by the State of Texas for Do the Write Thing, an essay competition that focused on the state of violence in our nation, through this recognition I went to Washington and to the State Capitol of Texas to speak and meet legislators and ambassadors of our nation. I won a city-wide poetry contest as a freshman, and a article I wrote for the school newspaper was picked up by the national school newspaper website. My current goal is to pursue my interest in psychiatry post high school graduation. I realize this will take dedication and many years of study and I’m intent on striving for this goal.
